Puthuvype beach, located in the western suburb of Kochi City, is one of Kerala’s less frequented beaches simply because not many people know about it. The serene sea, the green topography at the beach and the lone trees upright in the shore makes it an ideal destination. The Chinese fishing nets afford a pastoral charm to the scenery. Its proximity to the city of Kochi makes Puthuvype an easy picnic spot. It is located at a distance of 5 km from High Court Junction. Puthuvype is a part of Vypin Island. Puthuvype is bounded by Vembanad Lake in the east, the Arabian Sea in southwest and Njarakkal in Northern side. The main accesses in the area are Vypin-Munambam Road and LNG Terminal Road. A Mega Oceanarium project is coming up at Puthuvype, at an expanse of 65 acres with a venture of Rs.300 crores. This is the first Oceanarium of the country and will be biggest in Asia. Puthuvype is going to host the first oceanarium of the country to showcase an aquarium alley and deep sea tunnel.
The beach is wider and cleaner compared to Kochi beach. It is an ideal place for beach volley. For those who love water adventures, it’s an ideal place. The lawn is not marshy and ideal for playing beach sports. Speed boats are available near the beach for those who are interested in water sports and adventures. Sea bathing is another option that can be tried. The lighthouse tower, another huge attraction at Puthuvype, offers a spectacular view of the beach and its surroundings. When built, it was one of the tallest lighthouses in Asia. The lighthouse was built in 1979 which was shifted from Fort Kochi. It has an elevation of 43 meters and is prepared of double-layered concrete. Its light beam can cover a range of 28 nautical miles. The powerful beacon light emanated is considered to be equal to the shine of 4 million lighted candles.
The beach buggies or off-road vehicles, ideal for driving along beaches is fetching popularity as part of adventure tourism in the Puthuvype beach. These are available for rent at the beach which will provide great fun for visitors. These buggies which have reverse gear can swerve on the sand and is tailor-made for even women and children.
