The Mattupetty Lake in the dam premises is a perennial lake that never dries up, even in the summers & swells to its maximum capacity in the monsoons. This attracts many wild animals and birds to the lake. Boating activities for tourists are available on this lake reservoir.

History
Mattupetty was initially known as Madupetty by the locals meaning Cattle village. The Government of Kerala commissioned the gravity dam construction under the Pallivasal Hydro-electric project to generate electricity. The Mattupetty Dam construction started in 1949 & it was built within 5 years and opened in 1953 at a total cost of INR 220 lakhs.
Weather
The Weather remains pleasant at the Mattupetty Dam premises all year long. Max. 26-280 degrees in the afternoon. If it rains, expect a drop in temperature to 230 or so.
Location
The Mattupetty Dam is located on the “Munnar-Top Station” mountain highway near Munnar in Idukki District.

- The village of Mattupetty is situated at an altitude of 1,700 metres above sea level,
- The Mattupetty Dam has 3 radial spillway gates & has a total height of 85.34 metres.
- There is a well-paved road of 237.75 metres at the top of the Mattupetty Dam to ply vehicles & for pedestrians to walk.
- There are lookouts to stop and take panoramic shots of the little hills and the dense vegetation around the lake.
- It is not recommended to visit Mattupetty during monsoons as it becomes risky to walk on the Dam and even indulge in water sport activities.
- Mattupetty is an excellent for camping and trekking
- Sighting of Elephant herds is expected on the banks of Mattupetty Lake.
- The Lake water is used extensively for irrigation of the fields in this village.

Boating
A beautiful lake is nestled in the midst of the hills, with tea gardens, Shola forest, and dense woods surrounding it. You can go boating to experience the serene ambience of the lake on speed boats, pedal boats, motor boats, or row boats.
