Annually, the docile waters of the River Pamba hosts a splendid feat- the Uthradam Thirunal Pamba Boat Race.
It is held during one of the most auspicious days of Onam – Uthradam. It’s a remarkable sight to see extensive participation with locals and tourists swamping the banks of the river and inciting on the rowers with much fervour.
This ostentatious water regatta unleashes such a pictorial grandeur that travellers reach in great numbers from far and wide to be part of this glorious spectacle. The serene waters of the River Pamba at Neerettupuram in Alappuzha is converted into a race track as regal snake boats wedge through the waters to the rhythmic notes of the boat songs.
This boat race witnesses a participation of huge number of people along with number of snake boats. The oarsmen recite the vanchipaattu (boat songs) and propel the boat to reach the finishing point. The rowers strive with all their verve to bag the prominent K.C. Mammen Mappillai Trophy.
How to reach
Best way to reach is to take a flight to Kochi and then take a taxi or public transport to event venue at Alappuzha.
Alternatively, you could reach Alappuzha or Changanassery directly by train and then take public transport.
